Facebook Timeline

Since the beginning of Facebook, your profile has been the place where you tell your story. People use it to share everything from the small stuff, like their thoughts on an article, to the most important events of their lives, like the photos of their wedding or the birth of their child.

The evolution of your profile

Back in the early days of Facebook, your profile was pretty basic – just your name, a photo, where you went to school…stuff you'd cover in the first five minutes you met someone.

Facebook Auto Import Out by Sept 30

From Sept 30, you can no longer expect that your blog's RSS feeds will be automatically imported into your Page's Wall.

We want you to connect with your fans in the most effective ways possible. That's why as of September 30th you'll no longer be able to automatically import posts from your website to your page notes. The best way to get people to interact with your content is to give them insight into the links you share on your Wall by adding personal comments and responding to feedback from fans.
We're focused on creating even better tools for pages - look for announcements soon.

Over Sharing, Too Little Privacy The New Facebook

Facebook just had a massive overhaul. The biggest and most noticeable change is the new Facebook Profile.
Many users are reacting negatively. Maybe people are just not used to change. Facebook's goal is to increase usage that has gone stale especially in USA. From my own observations, my Facebook 'friends' are already complaining about the new features:
1. The news feeds and top stories that have pop ups that hide the top stories you might want to see
2. The tedious task of 'categorizing' your friends to your acquaintances
3. And now, the Facebook Timeline - which users feel  look more like a blog instead of a social network site

Is there such a thing as over-sharing? Is the majority of the Facebook users who actually 'share' information happy about the new and slightly more complicated layout? Is Facebook launching a new set of features to compete with Google +?

So far, Facebook has reached up to 800 million users. More people are uploading photos and sharing experiences. Facebook has a substantial lead in social media networking. They have the database and the system to personalize your online searches and feed you with information you are interested in.  The question really is - are these the right information you should be filling your mind with?

We're all spectators to the show for now. What's important to you or me or anyone might not be important in the whole scheme of things. Something for us to think about amidst this entire social media frenzy.

All Small Businesses Should Use Facebook - Facebook COO

In an effort to drive all small businesses to use Facebook, the social media giant will be giving away $50 advertising credit to 200,000 businesses. Will this actually work? The beauty of Facebook advertising is that it allows marketers to specifically target their market in terms of demographics, location, interests, etc.

"My dream is really simple," said Sandberg, 42, seated near a framed graffiti rendering of co-founder Mark Zuckerberg at Facebook's headquarters here. "I think every small business should … be using Facebook. We're not going to stop until all of them are using it to grow their business." Read full article here

Facebook Subscriber Feature

If you have Facebook account, you can now allow people to subscribe to your random thoughts and updates. This is their answer to Google + Circles feature and blogging feature. This is a very interesting update from Facebook. However, this isn't quite similar to blogging yet. Blogging allows your posts to be searched on the internet (search engines) through keywords.

Facebook however is now increasingly personalizing their feeds and search results. This makes it such a more powerful search engine and information hub. Information on Facebook aren't categorized and new feeds are not labeled yet. Newfeeds are actually archived - posts are seen most likely by people who are online at the moment the post is made or only a few hours after. This is an issue Facebook has to fix.We shall then have to wait and see how Facebook further propels itself to become the most powerful web interface in the world.

3 Reasons Why People Setup a Facebook Page

Many small business expect instant direct sales when they set up a website or when they set up a facebook page, or a blog. However the reality is, a website, blog, facebook page needs to be closely integrated with your business' entire marketing strategy. This is why it's necessary to set your goals and expectations.  It is also important to share these goals and expectations to your marketing assistants.

The top 3 reasons why people & organizations setup a page on facebook are:
1. To build a community - for a cause, for similar interests (travel, music, artists)
2. To distribute information (brand awareness) - for a brand, business, new product
3. To sell online which is the most aggressive and hardest to tackle with

These days leading internet companies like google (most importantly) give very high consideration to the # of times your website is mentioned on social media channels when calculating your chances of being on top of the results on their search engine.  This could be the 4th and extra reason why people setup a Facebook page.

Are You A Good Social Media Marketer?

In  a world without internet, people become social savvy. They know the moves to connect with their audience.  The reality is, common social rules apply on social media online as well.  Here are a few pointers:
1. Don't over promote - people understand you'd talk about your business but surely that's not something they'd want to know all the time. Instead, offer information which will help them. Offer information which they can relate to and they will be in tune to your posts and updates. Otherwise, you run the risk of having even your friends 'hide' your posts.
2. No room for arrogance - you may have the freedom of speech in social media but your listeners aka followers also have the freedom to unsubscribe from your feeds. Social media is a worldwide audience - across multiple cultures. Take into consideration cultural viewpoints.
3. Show sincerity - Think about what you say. A single educational and insightful comment is better than a hundred trivial posts.
